Struggling to Understand English Tenses usage? My Personal Journey

Why did I choose to focus on English tenses usage in my first blog post?

1. Starting this blog and facing my biggest fear

When I decided to create this blog, my main goal was simple: to track my English learning journey and be honest about my progress, mistakes, doubts, little victories, and all.

For my very first post, I wanted to start with the biggest challenge I face when speaking English: using the correct verb tense. Why? Because it's the one thing that always makes me hesitate, second-guess myself, and sometimes feel like I can't express what I really mean.

2. Struggling with tenses: what’s holding me back

Even though I’ve learned how to build sentences and conjugate verbs, I still get nervous about choosing the right tense. Every time I speak, I ask myself: “Am I using the correct form of the verb here?” That fear often makes me stutter or pause, and sometimes the people I'm talking to don't fully understand me.

As someone who's naturally shy, especially when speaking in front of others, this adds even more pressure. I get so focused on avoiding grammar mistakes that I forget to just speak freely.

3. Why mastering tenses matters to me

For me, learning how to use English tenses properly is more than just a grammar rule—it’s a way to build confidence. When I know I’m using the right tense, I feel more relaxed, and communication becomes much easier.

That’s why I chose to focus on tenses in my first blog post. I wanted to start where I struggle the most and turn that weakness into a strength, one post at a time.

4. Learning tenses with a different perspective

To understand English tenses better, I did some research and I realized something interesting: mastering tenses is really about learning how English speakers think about time.

For native speakers, this may seem natural. But for me, living in a country where French is the main second language and Malagasy is the everyday language, this concept of time feels very different. In French or Malagasy, we don't express time exactly the same way as in English. This makes it even more challenging, but also fascinating.

5. What’s next on this journey

So now you know why I started here. Tenses are my biggest fear and my biggest motivation. I hope that by writing about it and sharing what I learn, I’ll be able to make progress and maybe even help others who feel the same.

In my next posts, I’ll try to break down what I discover about English tenses, one piece at a time. If you’re also learning English, feel free to walk this path with me!

see you in the next on this journey
